Puppy training protocols

The first sixteen weeks after birth — roughly the last weeks in the breeder or rescue and the first weeks in your home — are a working window, not a personality test. You are building a toilet pattern, a rest pattern, and a mouth that can be around human skin.

Start with sleep. Enforced naps for puppies when the mouth is already late, when do puppies sleep through the night for the dry-morning criterion, and the puppy day schedule for the daily loop. Then crate training as daytime management, nights 1–7 as a separate protocol, first night home as arrival, toileting in a US yard or UK flat, nipping as a skill, crate duration and crate size for the box, and socialization weeks 8–16 for short clean exposures — not a dog-park festival. Public veterinary bodies treat early, careful social exposure as compatible with vaccination when hygiene is managed — see the AVSAB position on puppy socialization. That is not a licence to flood a puppy at a garden centre. It is a warning against waiting at home until the last injection.
