12 week old puppy schedule: sample day with times
At twelve weeks wake spells stretch toward an hour or more, naps drop to about four a day and many puppies move to three meals. A sample day with times, and what moved since week ten.
A 12 week old puppy schedule keeps the same loop as week ten with longer gaps: toilet on waking, 60 to 90 minutes awake, toilet again, then a nap. Most puppies this age take about four daytime naps, eat three meals and still sleep most of the 24 hours. The general loop and how it grows from 8 to 16 weeks lives on the puppy day schedule. This page gives you one sample day at twelve weeks and lists what moved since week ten.

What does a 12 week old puppy schedule look like?
At twelve weeks, the naps still come first. Longer awake spells give you room for training and outings, but each spell still ends in sleep.
Here is a sample day for a puppy who wakes at 6:30 am. Shift every time if your house starts earlier or later. Keep the order and the gaps.
| Time | What happens |
|---|---|
| 6:30 | Wake. Straight out to the toilet spot on lead. Breakfast, then play and a three-minute training slot. |
| 7:45 | Toilet, then a nap in the crate or pen. |
| 9:30 | Wake, toilet. A short, quiet outing or time in the garden or yard, then a chew. |
| 10:45 | Toilet, nap. |
| 12:30 | Wake, toilet, lunch. Training slot, a little handling (paws, ears, mouth). |
| 13:45 | Toilet, long midday nap. |
| 15:45 | Wake, toilet. Food toy, then a few minutes watching the street from a calm spot. |
| 17:00 | Toilet, nap. |
| 18:15 | Wake, toilet, dinner, gentle play and a training slot. |
| 19:30 | Toilet, nap or quiet time in the pen. |
| 21:00 | Wake, toilet, a chew beside you on the sofa or floor. |
| 22:30 | Last toilet, bed in the crate. |
| Night | Some puppies need one trip, often between 3 and 5 am. Others now sleep through. |
That is four naps and three meals. The night trip stays dull: lead on, toilet, back to bed, lights low, no play. When your puppy starts waking dry, the night toilet trips page covers how to stop setting an alarm.
Your puppy will drift from these times. A nap that runs 20 minutes long is fine. A puppy who has been awake for 90 minutes and is grabbing your trouser legs needs the crate now, whatever the table says.
How long should a 12 week old puppy be awake?
Most puppies at twelve weeks handle 60 to 90 minutes awake. The morning spell can run toward the top of that range. The late afternoon and evening spells often run shorter, closer to an hour.
Grow the spells slowly. If your ten-week day used 45 to 60 minutes, add 10 to 15 minutes at a time over several days, and watch how the next nap goes. A puppy who settles fast and wakes soft is ready for a little more. A puppy who bites harder and needs longer to settle needs the shorter spell back.
Signs the nap is late: harder biting, zoomies, barking at you, grabbing the lead or your sleeves, and a puppy who cannot settle with a chew. The full chart by age is on the enforced nap clock. Naps at this age still often last one to two hours. Protect the midday one, even at weekends.
What changed since 10 weeks?
Compare this day with the 10 week old puppy schedule. These things usually move:
- Awake spells. From 45 to 60 minutes up to 60 to 90 minutes.
- Number of naps. From five or six daytime naps down to about four.
- Meals. Many puppies drop from four meals to three. Ask your vet or breeder about amounts.
- Toilet gaps. The puppy holds a little longer while awake, and the night trip may fade. Accidents should be rare by now if the clock has stayed tight.
- Training slots. Three to five minutes instead of two, three or four times a day.
- Outings. Short, calm trips become a daily part of the day. Ask your vet when your puppy can walk on public ground. Until then, carry the puppy or stay in your own garden or yard.
- Mouth. Teething often starts in the weeks after this, so chewing and mouthing can rise. Keep safe chews in every room.
What stays the same: a toilet trip after every sleep, meal and play, a nap after every awake spell, and a pen, gate or your eyes in between.
Where do training and outings fit at 12 weeks?
Inside the awake spells, early in the spell, while the puppy is fresh. Good things to practise:
- the name game and coming to you for food
- sit, down and a hand target
- going into the crate for a piece of food
- gentle handling of paws, ears and mouth
- walking a few steps beside you on lead in the house or garden
Short waits at doors and food bowls, first steps of leave-it and early mat work also start around now. The order and steps for those live on the 12–16 week impulse map. Add one new skill at a time, not all of them in one week.
Outings at twelve weeks are for watching, not for long walks. Sit on a bench, let the puppy see people, traffic and other dogs at a distance where it can still eat, then go home before it gets tired. Count the outing as part of the awake spell. The socialization schedule has a week-by-week list, and walk length by age covers how far to go.
In a UK flat, the stairs or lift and the walk to the grass are part of the spell. In a US house with a yard, keep the lead on for toilet trips, so the trip stays a toilet trip and the garden games come after.
When should you ask your vet?
Ask your vet if your puppy pees very often in small amounts, strains, has diarrhoea or vomits, drinks much more than usual, is sleepy in a way that worries you, or cannot settle at all even in a quiet room. Hold off on schedule changes until you have spoken to your vet. See when to call the vet.
What are the usual mistakes?
- Treating 90 minutes as a target. It is the top of the range. Many puppies do better on 60 to 75.
- Dropping a nap too early. Four naps with a long midday one is normal at this age.
- Long weekend outings. A busy day out pushes naps back and the evening falls apart.
- Training when the puppy is tired. End of the spell is nap time, not lesson time.
- Several changes in one week. A new meal plan, longer spells and a first trip to town all at once is too much.
- Free run of the house. Fewer accidents does not mean none. Keep gates up for a while yet.
Use this day with the puppy day schedule for the bigger picture, the enforced nap clock for wake spells by age and the 12–16 week impulse map for the next skills. More guides sit on the puppy hub.
Questions on this page
What should a 12 week old puppy schedule look like?
A repeating loop of toilet, an awake spell of about 60 to 90 minutes and a nap, from around 6:30 am to a last toilet near 10:30 pm. Most 12 week old puppies take about four daytime naps, eat three meals and still sleep most of the 24 hours. Training slots and short outings go inside the awake spells.
How long can a 12 week old puppy stay awake?
Usually 60 to 90 minutes, often closer to an hour in the late afternoon. Treat 90 minutes as the top of the range, not a target. Harder biting, zoomies and barking at you mean the nap is late. The nap clock page lists wake spells for each age.
How often does a 12 week old puppy need to pee?
After every nap, meal and play session, and about every 60 to 90 minutes while awake. Many 12 week old puppies still need one trip in the night, and some start to sleep six or seven hours. If your puppy pees very often in small amounts, strains, or drinks far more than usual, ask your vet.
How many meals does a 12 week old puppy eat?
Many puppies move from four meals to three around this age. Keep the times the same every day, because regular meals bring regular toilet trips. Ask your vet or breeder how much to feed, and use part of the daily food for training and food toys.
What changed between 10 and 12 weeks?
Awake spells get longer, there are fewer naps, many puppies drop a meal, toilet gaps grow a little and the night trip may fade. Training slots can run three to five minutes and outings become a regular part of the day. Teething often starts soon after, so chews matter more.
