How do you move a puppy from a balcony tray to the garden?

Same cue. Escort. Pay the outdoor empty. Then shrink the tray.

Start on a quiet morning after sleep or after a meal, when the bladder is ready. Leash on. Go straight to the outdoor spot you named. Say the toilet word once. Stand still. When elimination happens on grass or soil, mark and feed. Go back inside. Rest.

Do not open the garden as a free sniff tour and hope toileting appears. The tray worked because it was boring and clear. The garden needs the same clarity for the first weeks.

US yard versus UK garden after a tray?

Label the setup you actually have.

US house or apartment with yard access: one door to a fenced patch or a strip you own. Escort every trip until outdoor empties are cheap. Bag and building rules still apply if you use a shared relief strip.

UK flat or house with garden: stairs or lift may sit between balcony and grass. A shared garden edge still counts as outdoor if you name it and pay it. Pavement-only buildings may never get a private garden; then outdoor means a known pavement or park edge with bagging, not a fantasy lawn.

Should you keep the balcony tray forever?

What if the puppy holds it outdoors and pees on the tray later?

You asked for outdoor empty at the wrong time or with too little pay.

1. Go out after waking, after meals, after play, and before crate rests. Match the intervals you used when the tray worked.
2. Keep outdoor trips short and boring until empty. Then pay heavily.
3. If the puppy returns holding it, try one more short outdoor trip before you offer the tray.
4. If you still use the tray that day, do not scold a later tray empty. You kept two toilets available. Tighten timing tomorrow.
5. Raise outdoor pay and cut free tray access until the garden wins most days.
