Young puppies need midday toilet and a reset. Stretching crate hours to match a nine-to-five is not “tough love.” It is a welfare miss. If your job cannot cover midday, buy coverage or change the plan — do not invent a longer box.

A crate manages rest. It does not replace a workday toilet break.

How do you build a leave-for-work day?

Morning: toilet, short wake window, settle or crate nap after a calm meal — not a chaos send-off.
Depart on a boring cue. No ten-minute apology party at the door.
Midday: human coverage for toilet and a brief reset (walker, neighbor, daycare staff, or you).
Afternoon: gated zone or pen with legal chews only if the puppy can handle that length; otherwise more coverage, not more hope.
Evening: toilet, short training or sniff walk, then rest. Catch-up play until midnight creates overtired mouths.

UK flat versus US suburban?

US (typical): suburban yard and garage entry. A midday walker or dog-door only when housetraining and yard safety are real. Many puppies still need a person at lunch.

What are the usual failure modes?
