What is the name game?

A pairing drill you can run in two minutes.

Puppy is a few steps away, not already in your lap.
You say the name once in a normal voice.
Puppy looks toward you or turns the head.
You mark (quiet “yes” or click if already paired).
You feed at your body, then often release the puppy to sniff again.

That is enough. You are buying orientation. You are not buying a sprint across a park yet.

One name. If the household uses “Bella,” “Bell,” “puppy,” and “hey you,” you have four weak words. Pick one for training. Nicknames can exist later. The training word stays clean.

How do you teach the name?

Mark the orient. Feed at your legs or chest, not tossed behind them.
Release. Let them leave so the name does not always end the fun.
Repeat until the look is cheap. Then take one step farther. Then a hallway.
Only then a garden or balcony with mild distraction. If they fail, you were too far or too interesting. Do not shout the name three more times.

US living rooms and UK flat corridors change the distance available. The learning does not. One utterance. Pay. Reset.

If you use a clicker, pair it first on markers and criteria. The name is the cue. The marker is the bridge to food.

Why does the puppy ignore the name?

Common histories:

the name was wallpaper (“Bella bella bella” all day)
the name predicted bath, nail clip, or end of park
the name predicted a scold
you tested in the garden before the kitchen was cheap

Reset. Easy room. Better food. One clean utterance. Pay the smallest look. Rebuild the bank account before you spend the word outside.

Do not chase the puppy while repeating the name. That teaches that the name means “keep moving.” Walk over, collect, feed for orientation when you can still win, then shorten the next rep.
