Puppy Pees When Excited or Greeting: How to Stop It
A puddle at the door is not always a toilet fail. Soft body, belly show, and greeting leaks need a different protocol than a missed outdoor schedule.
Short answer
Puppies often pee a little when excited or when someone greets them, especially by leaning over them. It is not a potty training failure, and scolding makes it worse. Greet calmly and low, ignore the puppy for the first minute after you come home, greet outside if you can, and wait. Most puppies outgrow it by about a year.
Submissive urination versus a potty fail is a sorting problem before it is a scolding problem. Some puddles mean the outdoor schedule failed. Some puddles mean the greeting was too big for a soft puppy. Potty training owns schedules and named toilets. How do you tell submissive urination from a potty-training fail?
Read body and timing.
Likely toilet miss: quiet room or crate area, after a nap or long play, no guest in the frame, puppy then sniffs and moves on, bladder was due on your schedule.
Likely soft or excitement leak: latch turns, guest leans in, you loom for a hug, a scolding starts, body goes low or wriggly, pee appears in the social moment, volume is often small.
Both can be true on the same day. A full bladder plus a huge greeting is a stacked fail. Empty first, then shrink the greeting. Do not pick one label and ignore the other variable.
Punishing a soft puddle often buys a softer puddle next time.
What do you do when a puppy pees during greetings?
Change the picture the puppy is leaking into.
- Toilet trip before known arrivals when you can predict them.
- Guest or owner turns sideways, soft voice, no reach over the head.
- Toss food on the floor or greet at chest height only after the body stays soft and dry.
- Keep first contact short. End while the puppy is still succeeding.
- If the puppy starts to wriggle-leak, step back, become boring, reset outside or behind a gate, try a smaller hello.
Clean with an enzymatic cleaner. Do not rub the nose in it. Do not shout. Soft dogs read your face as pressure.

Label the setup you actually have.
US entry (typical): room to sit on a chair sideways, toss food, or send the puppy to a mat before guests enter.

It fixes the full-bladder half.
Keep the outdoor or pad schedule honest so greetings do not start on a tank that was already due. Then stop treating every door puddle as “needs more yard time.” Soft leaks need lower greetings and better prediction, not only more toilet reps. Full first teaching stays on potty training. Do puppies grow out of excitement peeing?
Most do. Bladder control improves with age, and greetings get less overwhelming as the puppy grows in confidence. Many puppies stop by 6 to 12 months, some later. You can speed it up by keeping greetings dull:
- come in, put bags down, and do not look at the puppy for a minute
- crouch to the side instead of leaning over
- scatter a few treats on the floor so the puppy sniffs instead of wriggling
- ask guests to greet the same way, or greet in the garden
If the puppy leaks without excitement, leaks while asleep, or the urine changes, see your vet. Those are not greeting problems.
What should I do right after an excited pee?
Nothing dramatic. Do not scold, sigh loudly or rush in to clean while the puppy watches. Carry on calmly, take the puppy outside, and clean the spot later with an enzyme cleaner. Any fuss tends to make the next greeting more intense, which makes another leak more likely.
What are the usual failure modes?
- You scolded the soft puppy. Pressure rose. Leaks rose.
- You only added toilet trips and kept loom-greetings. Sort the greeting picture.
- You hugged harder to “show love.” Sideways and short wins.
- You let every guest rehearse the old hello. Brief them or gate the dog.
