How do you tell submissive urination from a potty-training fail?

Read body and timing.

Likely toilet miss: quiet room or crate area, after a nap or long play, no guest in the frame, puppy then sniffs and moves on, bladder was due on your schedule.

Likely soft or excitement leak: latch turns, guest leans in, you loom for a hug, a scolding starts, body goes low or wriggly, pee appears in the social moment, volume is often small.

Both can be true on the same day. A full bladder plus a huge greeting is a stacked fail. Empty first, then shrink the greeting. Do not pick one label and ignore the other variable.

Punishing a soft puddle often buys a softer puddle next time.

What do you do when a puppy pees during greetings?

Change the picture the puppy is leaking into.

1. Toilet trip before known arrivals when you can predict them.
2. Guest or owner turns sideways, soft voice, no reach over the head.
3. Toss food on the floor or greet at chest height only after the body stays soft and dry.
4. Keep first contact short. End while the puppy is still succeeding.
5. If the puppy starts to wriggle-leak, step back, become boring, reset outside or behind a gate, try a smaller hello.

Clean with an enzymatic cleaner. Do not rub the nose in it. Do not shout. Soft dogs read your face as pressure.

US hallway versus UK flat landing for soft leaks?

Label the setup you actually have.

US entry (typical): room to sit on a chair sideways, toss food, or send the puppy to a mat before guests enter.

Keep the outdoor or pad schedule honest so greetings do not start on a tank that was already due.
