Down-stay on a mat vs place: which skill you need
Down-stay is the picture. Place is the address. Pick the job before you stack cues.
A free down-stay is a dog who lies down and stays until you release, wherever the body landed. Place is a different job: go to a defined mat, park, stay until release. The down can look identical. The location rule is not. This page compares the two so you stop teaching one cue and hoping it covers both.
This is a skills comparison. I run month-plus residential work as a trainer from Russia. I am not a veterinarian. I will not invent a US address, a fake review, or an academy name. Place already teaches the mat settle. Read that for the station ladder. Stay here when you need a free down that holds without a send.
What is the difference between a down-stay and place?
Same elbows. Different address.
Down-stay: cue a down (or capture one), hold until release. The floor under the dog is enough. No mat required.
Place: a station object. Four paws on that mat, usually a down, stay until release. The mat is part of the picture.
If you say “place” and mean “just lie down somewhere,” you taught mush. If you say “down” and expect the dog to cross the room to a bed, you taught a surprise. Name the criterion out loud before the session.
Wait at the door is a third job: feet behind a sill. Sit for greeting is optional polish at a hello. Do not dump those into this comparison.
When do you need a free down-stay instead of place?
When the mat is the wrong tool.
Use a free down-stay when you are in a US vet lobby, a UK waiting room, a cafe aisle, a park bench, or a hallway with no bed to send to. Use place when you want the dog parked off the kitchen traffic, away from a latch, or on a known station while you cook. Guests and dinner prep usually want the address. Travel and public floors usually want the free hold.
If there is no mat in the room you care about, place is not the skill you are missing.
Many households need both. A dog who only knows place will stall when the mat is in the wash. A dog who only knows a free down will drift into the hallway during dinner because nothing pinned the corner.
How do you teach a free down-stay without cloning place?
Leave the mat in the cupboard for this ladder.
- Teach a clean down in a quiet room. Mark. Feed at chest height or between the paws so the elbows stay down.
- Add one second, then two, then five. Pay while the dog is still down. Release with one clear word.
- Take one step away only after duration is cheap. Return and pay on the down. If the dog follows, you raised too soon.
- Add mild noise: kettle, chair scrape, a person walking past. Keep the mat out of the frame.
- Proof where you will use it: hallway, parked car curb, cafe corner on a short lead. Real exams last.
Markers keep the picture honest. See markers and criteria. Measure food from the day’s ration with food as a reinforcer.
Do not paste the send-to-mat chain here. That chain, the mat definition, and cooking-noise proofing for a station live on place. Cross-link it. Do not clone it.
Can you run both skills in the same house?
Yes. Two cues. Two jobs.
Pick words that sound different. Many handlers use “down” / “stay” for the free hold and “place” or “mat” for the station. What matters is that each word predicts one picture. Practice free downs on bare floor. Practice place only with the mat down. If you cue place with no mat visible, you taught a ghost.
US open-plan kitchens and UK narrow flats both work. Furniture changes. Criteria do not. A flat landing may force place into a hallway corner. A suburban kitchen may put the mat beside an island. The free down still has to hold when you leave the mat at home.
When is neither ladder the right DIY fix?
Use a fence you can see.
This comparison: dog takes food in a down, body is loose, early breaks are resets, you can manage the room.
Not this ladder: panic when you step away, frantic pacing, no appetite, stiff freeze, or aggression around the body. Pain is veterinary first. True panic at duration is not fixed by a louder stay cue. Manage. Get qualified help in your country. Dogmindlab will not invent a triage inbox.
What usually fails?
- You used one word for both jobs. The dog invents a mash-up. Split the cues.
- You taught place and called it a free stay. Remove the mat and the picture dies. Build free duration separately.
- You added distance before duration. The dog follows. Pay seconds on the elbows first.
- You proofed only in the kitchen. Cafe floors and hallways are different exams.
- You scolded every early stand. Reset, shorten, pay the next hold. Drama pays the break.
- You stacked stay on a dog who cannot take food. Arousal or welfare first. Not a cue problem.

Questions on this page
What is the difference between a down-stay and place?
A down-stay is a down that holds until release, wherever the dog landed. Place is a station: go to a defined mat, park (usually a down), stay until release. Same body shape can serve both jobs. The location rule is what changes.
When do you need a free down-stay instead of place?
When there is no mat, when the dog must hold a down beside you in a hallway or park, or when you want duration without sending to a station. Kitchen cooking and guest parking usually want place. A vet waiting room or a cafe aisle often wants a free down-stay.
How do you teach a free down-stay without cloning place?
Teach a clean down first. Mark and feed while the elbows stay down. Add seconds, then one step away, then mild noise. Leave the mat out of the picture until the free stay is cheap. Place owns the send-to-mat chain on its own page.
Can you run both skills in the same house?
Yes. Different cues, different jobs. Place means go to that mat. Down-stay means hold the down here. Do not use one word for both or the dog will invent a mash-up. Proof each picture where you will actually need it.
When is neither ladder the right DIY fix?
Panic, inability to take food, a stiff freeze, or a dog who explodes the moment you step away. Manage, check rest and pain, and get qualified help. This page compares two manners skills. It is not a clinic.
