Do you need place first?

Yes for a clean transfer. Build [place](/skills/place/) until four paws and a down on the mat are cheap, then add a second station (bed) and a send cue. Do not invent a new “place” on the bed and pretend the transfer is done.

How do you teach the send without a collar drag?

Stand near the mat, cue place if needed, then present the bed as an obvious win with a toss or a hand target toward the bed. Mark arrival, pay on the bed, release later. Raise distance between stations one step at a time.

US open-plan versus UK flat bedroom-to-lounge?

Same transfer. US open plans need a clear bed location so “bed” is not three sofas. UK flats often use a short hallway between mat and bed — excellent mid-ladder distance once kitchen sends are easy.

How do you teach the transfer?

Two clear stations. One send. Pay arrival.

Put the mat and the bed in the same quiet room with a short gap. Park the dog on place. Release or cue the leave, then make the bed the obvious next win — a food toss onto the bed or a brief hand target toward it. Mark when paws hit the bed or when a down lands. Feed on the bed. Reset to the mat. When the picture is fluent, add a short send cue as the dog already commits.

The send names a path between stations you already built, not a hope across the house.

What does a transfer ladder look like?

One raise at a time.

Mat and bed a few steps apart. Place, then send to bed, mark arrival, pay on the bed.
Add the verbal send cue as the dog commits. Keep both stations visible.
Add one step of distance. Then a thin doorway between stations.
Reverse: bed to mat for kitchen work. Same cue honesty.
Use in life: dinner prep, guest entry management, TV settle. Duration on each station still belongs to place and settle skills.

Do not drag the collar from mat to bed while chanting. That is not a send. That is a tow.

Why not just retrain place on the bed?

Different jobs.

Many homes need a daytime mat near the kitchen and a night bed elsewhere. Cloning place language onto every cushion smears cues. Keep place for the mat station. Keep a distinct bed send for the transfer. If you only ever need one station, stay on the place page.

US open-plan versus UK flat?

Same criterion. Different geography.

US (typical): open plans blur “bed” into every sofa. Stake one legal bed and one mat. Close bedroom doors during early reps so the send has one answer.

UK (typical): short hallways between lounge mat and bedroom bed are perfect mid-ladder raises — real walls, still winnable distances.

When is this the wrong tool?

Untrained place comes first — see place. Guarding a bed or growling over a station is not a DIY send ladder; manage and get qualified help. Crate intros stay on crate pages. Free down-stays stay on down-stay versus place.

What are the usual failure modes?

You never trained place. There is nothing to transfer from.
You raised distance and distraction together. One variable at a time.
You used the same cue for place and bed. Smeared stations.
You collar-dragged the send. That is not a cueable transfer.
You cloned down-stay vs place here. Different question, different page.
You paid the sofa instead of the legal bed. The dog learned the wrong station.
