Place during cooking: mat work under kitchen smells
Cooking is a duration exam under smell. Place intro builds the park. This page keeps the dog on the mat until plating is done.
Cooking is where place either becomes furniture or becomes a joke. Place teaches the park: go to the mat, down, stay until release in a room you still control. This page is the kitchen exam under real food smells: mat clear of the stove, duration while something actually cooks, release after plating, and an honest drop when the hot zone is too much.
I train on month-plus residential stays from Russia. I am not a veterinarian. No affiliate mats, no fake reviews.
This is a skills protocol. Use rate of reinforcement in the kitchen as the pay metronome, criteria stacking mistakes if you raise smell, duration, and guests together, down-stay vs place if you are mixing free downs with mat stations, and food bowl manners for bowl travel that is not a cook session.
Where does the mat go?
Out of the hot zone. In the dog’s sightline if you can pay. Never under your elbows.
US (typical): kitchen islands give you a far-side park. Mat on the living-room edge of the island, dog facing you, clear of the oven door. You can mark without stepping on a tail.
UK (typical): galley flats are a corridor. Mat just outside the galley mouth, or behind a baby gate with a view. A mat between cooker and sink is a trip hazard and a steal runway.
Same criterion both sides of the ocean: four paws on the mat until you release.
If the mat sits in the hot zone, you built a steal station.
How do you build cooking duration?
Quiet prep first. Heat second. Guests never first.
- Send to place on a cold kitchen. Pay a short down. Release. Repeat until boring.
- Add prep noise: chopping board, fridge open, bowls. Keep duration short. Mark stays, not standing resets.
- Add one heat variable: a low burner, an oven light, a kettle. Lock distance and guest absence.
- Stretch time in small bites while smell rises. Kitchen rate work tells you when the pocket is too empty.
- Release after plating, when hands are free. Then invite the dog if that is the house rule. Release is not a bribe tossed mid-sizzle.
If the dog leaves twice, you did not get a stubborn dog. You got a stacked picture. Drop duration or move the mat farther. Go to bed from place is a transfer skill for later; do not chain it into a first cook session.
When is the stove too hot a distractor?
When you cannot win five quiet reps without a stand-up, a counter cruise, or a bark at the pan.
Then you manage: gate the kitchen, crate with a chew in another room if the crate already works, or cook the hard stage while the dog is on a walk with another adult. Come back to place on quieter prep. Management is allowed. See management before manners.
Pain, panic, or guarding over dropped food leaves this ladder. Resource guarding and not veterinary advice are the fences.
US island versus UK galley failures?
Islands tempt you to park the dog under the overhang where crumbs fall. Galleys tempt you to squeeze the mat into the cooker aisle. Both fail the same way: unpaid rehearsal of stealing and underfoot chaos. Move the mat. Shorten the hold. Raise smell only after the park is cheap.
What are the usual failure modes?
- You cloned place intro under a screaming pan. Quiet park first.
- Mat in the hot zone. Far side or galley mouth.
- You stacked smell, duration, and a guest. One dial.
- Empty hands during the sizzle. Rate collapses; refill the pocket.
- Release tossed as a bribe mid-cook. Release after plating.
- Pride instead of a gate. Management is a valid session end.

Questions on this page
How is place during cooking different from place intro?
Place intro teaches go to mat, down, and a short stay in a quiet room. This page is the kitchen job: mat parked clear of the stove, duration under real food smells, release after plating, with management when the cook is too hot a distractor.
Where should the mat sit in a US island kitchen versus a UK galley?
US islands often allow a mat at the far side of the island, out of the hot zone. UK galley flats usually need the mat just outside the galley mouth or behind a gate. Same criterion: four paws on the mat, clear of burners and feet.
When is the stove too hot a distractor?
When the dog leaves every thirty seconds, steals from the counter edge, or you keep restacking duration, distance, and sizzle in one session. Drop to a quieter prep stage, shorten duration, or gate the kitchen and train place later.
When do you release from place while cooking?
After plating, when hands are free and the hot zone is stable. Release is a word you own. Sneaking food to the mat mid-sizzle as a bribe is not a release.
How does kitchen rate of reinforcement fit?
Rate keeps the picture paid while smell rises. See rate of reinforcement in the kitchen for the metronome. This page owns the mat station and the cook-to-plate arc.
