Criteria stacking mistakes: why the dog stops winning

Criteria stacking is raising distance, duration, and distraction in the same breath until the dog can no longer win. What does stacking look like in a kitchen?

Three raises, one cue.

You ask for a longer down, farther from the mat you warmed up on, while the kettle screams and a guest walks in. The dog stands, sniffs, offers a sit, then a bark. Handlers call that stubborn. It is usually an unpaid dog in a picture that no longer matches the last paid one.

If you changed three dials, you did not raise criteria. You wrote a new exam.

How do you raise without stacking?

Lock two. Move one.

1. Name the current cheap picture in one sentence: hip on mat, two metres from the fridge, ten quiet seconds, no doorbell.
2. Pick one dial. Stretch duration to fifteen seconds, or move one metre, or add soft kettle noise - never all three.
3. Mark and pay at a rate the dog can still win. Empty hands collapse the streak; see kitchen rate.
4. Only when that single raise is boring do you touch the next dial.
5. Two fails or a sniff-out: drop to the last cheap single raise. Finish the session with management if the house is already loud.

A place station is furniture. Rate is the metronome. Stacking is what happens when pride edits the sheet mid-cook.

US open-plan versus UK terrace?

When is stacking not the diagnosis?

Pain, panic, resource guarding, or a slam toward a child: manage and see a qualified professional. Resource guarding is a stop list, not a criteria tweak. Training pages are not veterinary advice.

What are the usual failure modes?

• You raised three dials because a video said “week two.” The dog’s streak is the calendar.
• You marked late after a stacked picture. The dog cannot name which piece paid.
• You cloned markers-and-criteria. That page is the rulebook; this one is the crash.
• You kept stacking after two fails. Drop. Management is allowed.
• You paid chaos to “keep them busy.” Mark the criterion you named.
• You ignored pain or bite risk. Manage and get help.
