Doorbell rehearsal: you schedule the sound. Management is already on. You pay look-back, place, or a down at the chime so the first reps never become a scream rehearsal.

How do you stage a doorbell without paying a bark?

Setup first. Sound second. Pay third.

1. Before any sound, the dog is on a short lead, behind a baby gate, on place, or in a crate already introduced.
2. You trigger a soft phone chime or a muffled bell. Not a surprise courier.
3. The instant the dog orients to you, or holds the down, or stays behind the line, you mark and feed.
4. If a bark wins, the sound stops being available for a pause. Reset management. Soften the chime. Try again.
5. Raise volume and realism only when the current step is boring.

If the first ring of the week is a real courier, you are not training. You are hoping.

US porch bells and UK flat entry phones differ in hardware. The criterion does not. A narrow landing is a reason to gate first, not a reason to demand silence from a free dog at the letterbox.

What quiet job should you pay at the ring?

One picture. Paid every time.

Good options once they are cheap elsewhere:

• look back to you for food
• hold a down beside you on a lead
• go to place on a mat away from the latch
• stay behind a gate while you answer

Pick one household default. Switching jobs mid-bark teaches chaos. Wait at the door can join later for the open sill. Sit for greeting is optional polish after four paws is cheap, not the first doorbell criterion.

Can you use a phone chime instead of the real bell?

Yes. That is how you own volume.

Start quiet. Pay. Nudge louder. Record your real bell on a phone if the hardware cannot soft-ring. Match the final sound only after softer versions produce a paid quiet job. Jumping to full volume on day one is how spirals get free reps.

Children ringing the bell for fun are unpaid trainers. Brief the house: staged sessions only, or the dog stays managed when kids play doorman.

When is doorbell work not DIY?

Use a fence.
