Why switch off food sometimes?

A dog who will not eat at the park may still want a sniff at a verge, a two-second toy flash, or a calm hand on the chest at home. Switching pay types is logistics, not a moral story about “bribery.” If the dog suddenly refuses all food and looks unwell, that is not a reinforcer puzzle — see when to call the vet.

The reinforcer must pay the soft picture — not the fireworks that follow a bad delivery.

What does a calm-reinforcer ladder look like?

Criterion first. Pay second. Short.

Name a visible calm criterion: four paws down, hip on mat, closed mouth on lead.
Confirm food really failed for logistics, not pride. Soften the picture if needed.
Choose one pay: brief toy, petting the dog leans into, or access (door, garden step, sniff spot).
Mark the calm moment. Deliver briefly. End before the dog revives into chaos.
Raise one variable later: longer stillness, harder room. Keep the pay calm.

Do not fling a squeaky toy at a screaming dog “to distract them.” That often pays the scream.

How is this different from food-as-reinforcer?

Different desk.

Food as a reinforcer is the ration pie: meals versus training slices, value ladders, fullness. Calm reinforcer assumes you already know that desk and need a non-food consequence that still follows a marker. Rate of reinforcement in the kitchen owns how often the dog wins in a busy room — with whatever pay fits.

US living room versus UK small kitchen?

Same rule. Different easy levers.

US (typical): open living rooms invite endless petting as background noise. Make petting contingent and short — mark soft, pet three seconds, stop.

UK (typical): small kitchens make doorway access a crisp reinforcer. Soft feet → open. Surge → pause. Pair with counter surfing management so access is not unpaid worktop hunting.

When is a calm reinforcer the wrong tool?
