Chin rest: cooperative care positioning on palm or lap

Chin rest is a cooperative-care skill: the dog parks the chin on your palm, lap, or a towel and holds until released. Hand target / touch owns nose-to-palm bumps for positioning and redirects. How do you teach a chin rest?

Make stillness obvious. Pay it. Name it later.

Sit sideways. Offer a low open palm or a folded towel on your thighs so the easiest win is a soft chin settle, not a leap onto your face. The instant the chin rests, mark and feed so the head can leave cleanly. Reset the surface. Repeat until the dog offers the rest when the surface appears. Then add a short cue as the dog is already lowering. Keep reinforcement high while the picture is new.

The cue names a rest you already built, not a pinned muzzle.

What does a chin-rest ladder look like?

One raise at a time.

1. Surface appears, chin settles, mark, feed. Quiet kitchen or living room.
2. Add the verbal cue as the dog commits. Keep the surface honest and still.
3. Hold one second, then two. Count before you mark. Do not add ear touch yet.
4. Add a light ear tip or collar brush while the chin stays. Mark the hold, not the flinch.
5. Use for care setups: eye wipe practice, harness near the face, then pair with muzzle work on its own page.

Do not push the head down and chant the cue louder. That is not raising criteria. That is smearing the picture and teaching escape.

How is chin rest different from hand target?

Different jobs.

Hand target moves the nose to a palm on cue. Chin rest parks the chin and holds. You can use touch to walk a dog into position, then cue chin rest for the care moment. Do not treat a fleeting nose bump as a finished chin rest.

US clinic lobby versus UK consulting room?

Same criterion. Different first distractions.

US (typical): open lobbies and automatic doors leak noise. Stake a boring home office until duration is cheap, then add TV soft noise and hallway footsteps on purpose before a real lobby sit.

UK (typical): small waiting rooms and high tables arrive fast. Build lap and palm rests at home with a towel “table” so the first clinic edge is not the first duration test.

When is chin rest the wrong tool?

Hard mouthing of hands belongs on mouthed hands during play. Pain on head touch, panic, or aggression needs veterinary or qualified professional help. See when to call the vet. Do not pin. Do not flood a scared dog with face handling “so they get used to it.”

What are the usual failure modes?

• You added the cue before the settle was reliable. The word means nothing yet.
• You raised duration and handling together. One variable at a time.
• You used hand target as a fake chin rest. Bump is not hold. Different skill.
• You pinned the head. Escape and panic are not duration.
• You skipped puppy handling and fear-of-vet context. Care skills need soft foundations.
