Criteria for ready for a dog training consult

A dog training consult is not a confession booth and not a magic hour. You are ready when you can name the problem picture, show it, and already stop the unpaid rehearsals that teach the opposite of what you want. If the house still pays door crashes every evening, the consult inherits a rehearsal factory.

What makes a household ready for a consult?

Clear input beats emotional volume.

Name the picture. Show it. Block the free rehearsal. Then book.

Named picture. “Leash reactivity to dogs at 10 meters” is a plan. “He’s crazy” is not. Evidence. A short intake video or precise notes beat a novel. Management already started. Management before manners — gates, leash, rest — so next week is not worse while you wait. Honest goals. One or two outcomes, with an out-of-scope list. Medical fence. Sudden change, limp, or pain-flagged “reactivity” goes to when reactivity is pain and a veterinarian before a manners desk owns the file.

US suburban kitchens and UK flats change the hardware. Readiness does not. A lift threshold and a garage door both need the same checklist.

How do you run the readiness checklist?

1. Write one primary problem in one sentence. Secondary goals wait.
2. Film or describe the real threshold — see intake video. No staged bites.
3. Install temporary management: pen, leash, guest brief, separate meals if needed. See management before manners.

Ready does not mean perfect. Ready means the trainer can see the job and the household will not erase the plan between sessions.

What are the usual failure modes?

• Booking before management. You pay for advice while the door still rehearses the crash.
• Vague goals. “Better behaved” has no criterion.
• Staged or missing video. Trainers cannot coach a myth.
• Skipping medical flags. Pain is not a sit cue problem.
• Fake reviews as readiness proof. Not on this site.
