How do you interrupt before a bite?

Interrupt is a skill you rehearse when the picture is still mostly good.

1. Stage the stop tools. Gate, long lines, or a treat trail ready before play starts. Hoping you can grab collars mid-spiral is not a plan.
2. Call early. Cheerful interrupt word, food on the floor between dogs, or walk them apart on lines. You are ending the round, not punishing play.
3. Pay the split. Mark and feed each dog away from the other. Disengagement is the criterion.
4. Rest or restart short. Water. Thirty seconds to two minutes soft only. If mouths harden again, session ends.
5. Keep kids out. Children are not part of the pile. See children and guests.

Evening spirals often ride sleep debt. Put the frantic dog down. Read enforced naps if the house is already late for rest.

What cues mean mouth pressure is climbing?

Use a fence you can see.

Still this ladder: loose spines, soft grabs that release, play bows or clear re-engage, both dogs can take a break and return willing.

Climbing off the ladder: harder clamps, repeated pin-and-hold, ignored yields, frantic re-engage with no pause, yelps that do not create space, mounting that becomes a fight, or a dog who cannot eat. Soft means soft.

Size gaps need shorter rounds even between peers. A heavy adolescent can bowl a light adult without “meaning” harm. Shorten. Separate.

Can you teach legal rough play again?

Yes. Legal rough play is timed, paid, and ended by you.

Start with known soft partners. Time-box one to three minutes. End while both are still soft. Mark the end. Raise duration only when soft restarts are cheap. Drag lines give you a physical stop without turning the session into a fight over collars.

If one dog always hunts and the other always flees, that is not mutual play. Pick a different partner or skip floor play for parallel walks. Puppy-adult play rules still apply when ages differ.

When is roughhousing not a DIY interrupt job?

Blood, locked fights, hard stares that do not break with distance, redirection onto hands or kids, or a dog who shuts down at every peer. Full split. No more free play.
